The GlobalEnglish Academic Advisors are leading scholars, authors, and innovators in the fields of teaching English as a second language (ESL) and English as a foreign language (EFL). These internationally recognized professionals are committed to guiding the pedagogical design of our online service.


Dr. David Nunan is director and chair of applied linguistics at the University of Hong Kong. He was the 1999-2000 president of International TESOL. Dr. Nunan has published over 100 books and articles in the areas of curriculum and materials development, classroom-based research, and discourse analysis. His recent publications include The Self-Directed Teacher and Voices from the Language Classroom (Cambridge University Press), as well as the Atlas, Listen In, and Go for it! series of textbooks (Heinle & Heinle). Dr. Nunan earned his Ph.D. in applied linguistics from Flinders University in Australia.


Dr. Mary Lou McCloskey is an adjunct professor at Georgia State University and director of teacher education and curriculum development for Educo in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. She is 2002-2003 president of International TESOL. Dr. McCloskey has served as a staff development specialist, consultant, writer, and curriculum developer in the area of English for school-age speakers of other languages, and has extensive teaching experience with preschool though high school students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. She has worked closely with teachers, teacher educators, and departments and ministries of education in many countries around the world. Dr. McCloskey has published extensively, and she is co-author of three programs for young learners: Voices in Literature, Making Connections, and Teaching Language, Literature and Culture. Dr. McCloskey earned her Ph.D. in educational leadership from Georgia State University.


Dr. Kathleen Bailey is a professor of applied linguistics at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California. Director of the TESOL M.A. program there for six years, she was also the Director of the Intensive English as a Second Language Program for three years. Dr. Bailey was the 1998-1999 president of TESOL. She has worked with language teachers in many countries and is the author or coauthor of numerous scholarly articles and books. Her two most recent books are Learning About Language Assessment: Dilemmas, Decisions and Directions (Heinle & Heinle, 1997) and Pursuing Professional Development: The Self as Source (co-authored with Andy Curtis and David Nunan, Heinle & Heinle, 2001). Dr. Bailey earned her Ph.D. in applied linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Linda Blanton is professor of English and director of the university honors program at the University of New Orleans. She is former chair of the department of English and coordinator of the university's program in English as a second language. Dr. Blanton has authored a number of best-selling writing textbooks, including the Composition Practice and The Multicultural Workshop series as well as the scholarly book Varied Voices on Language and Literacy Learning (Heinle & Heinle). She earned her Ph.D. in linguistics from the Illinois Institute of Technology.


Dr. Mary Ann Christison is professor of linguistics at the University of Utah and former president of International TESOL. She is the author of more than 50 books and scholarly articles on teaching ESL (English as a Second Language). Dr. Christison is a leading expert on the role that the brain plays in guiding the language learning process. She is also an authority on content-based language instruction and the application of multiple intelligence theory to second language learning. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Utah.


Dr. Fernando Fleurquin is academic director of the Alianza Cultural Uruguay Estados Unidos in Montevideo, Uruguay. He has coordinated workshops at international venues with Kathleen Bailey, David Nunan, and other leaders in the field of ESL/EFL (English as a Second Language/English as a Foreign Language). Dr. Fleurquin holds an M.D. from the University of the Republic (Uruguay) and a TEFL degree from the Alianza.


Barbara Foley is associate professor of English at Union County College in New Jersey, and is former director of the Institute for Intensive English at the college. Professor Foley is author of Listen to Me!, Now Hear This!, and The New Grammar in Action series (Heinle & Heinle). She has also co-authored Lifelines 1-4, a textbook series for recent immigrants (Pearson Education). Professor Foley holds an M.A. in TESOL from Rutgers University in New Jersey.


Helen Kalkstein Fragiadakis is chairperson of the department of English for international students at Contra Costa College in California. She is the author of All Clear!, a best-selling idioms series (Heinle & Heinle). Professor Fragiadakis writes about and presents widely on the teaching of idioms and the meaningful integration of ESL (English as a Second Language) students into community college life. She holds an M.A. in TESOL from San Francisco State University.


Linda Grant, former assistant director of the English as a Second Language Program at Emory University, is a writer, consultant, and teacher trainer associated with the M.A. TESOL program at Georgia State University. She is author of Well Said, the best-selling advanced pronunciation textbook (Heinle & Heinle), and writes about and presents widely on communicative approaches to teaching pronunciation. Professor Grant holds an M.A. in audiology from the University of Cincinnati.


Daphne Mackey is director of special programs in English as a second language at the University of Washington Extension. She has developed materials and provided teacher training for a wide range of corporate language programs. Professor Mackey is the author of Contact USA, Grammar Plus, and More Grammar Plus (Pearson Education), as well as the new Kaleidoscope Reading & Writing series (Houghton Mifflin). She earned her M.Ed. and M.B.A. at Boston University.


Joseph A. McVeigh is associate director for programs in ESL (English as a Second Language) and TESOL at the Center for Educational Technology at Middlebury College in Vermont. A chief focus of Professor McVeigh's work is exploring new and innovative methods of delivering language instruction through technology. Professor McVeigh is a former member of the board of directors of International TESOL. He holds an M.A. in TESOL from Biola University in California.


Dr. Joy Reid is professor of English at the University of Wyoming. She has written and consulted widely on topics in composition, international student issues, assessment, and learning styles. Dr. Reid's well-known publications include Understanding Learning Styles in the Second Language Classroom and Teaching ESL Writing as well as the textbooks Basic Writing, The Process of Composition (Pearson Education), and Looking Ahead (Heinle & Heinle). Dr. Reid is a former president of International TESOL. She holds a Ph.D. from Colorado State University.
